Belzona Corrosion Protection System Seals Oil Storage Tanks In Myanmar

Vivablast the exclusive distributor of Belzona in both Vietnam and Myanmar recently carried out a major corrosion protection project at a new oil tank terminal in Thilawa Port, Myanmar. A Belzona Seal-A-Tank System consisting of Belzona 3111, 3921, 9311 and 9431 was used to prepare and seal the bases of eleven newly built petroleum storage tanks ranging from 6 meters to 44 meters in diameter.

The oil storage facility is located on the banks of the Yangon River, 23km south-east of Yangon itself. The terminal is 150,000 m2 in area with LOA (Length Over All) of 200 meters and contains storage tanks and a jetty to service the increasing demand for petrochemical products.

Myanmar’s petrochemical demand is expected to grow at an annual average rate of 10 per cent through 2025, boosted by industrial development and the easing import regulations back in 2012 which led to an increase in the purchase of personal vehicles.

Before the Belzona system could be applied, senior technicians from Vivablast carried out the required surface preparation on each of the tanks. The tank chine angle which had been contaminated by chemicals was cleaned using high-pressure water. Belzona 9111 (Cleaner/Degreaser) was used to clean steel contaminated with oil and grease, repairs on the current asphalt were made and the concrete tank bases were prepared and readied.

The team of application technicians were able to work on two tanks simultaneously with all the preparation being completed in just two days. After inspecting the surface preparation, Belzona 3921 (GSC Surface Conditioner) was applied to the tank bases, followed by the installation of backer rods between the edge of the bottom plate and the bitumen foundation.

Belzona 9431 (Instant Bridging Tape) was applied over the transition joint between the annular and the base of the tank. The first coat of Belzona 3111 (Flexible Membrane) was then applied along with Belzona 9311 (Membrane Reinforcement).

Belzona 3111 is the ideal solution for the long-term protection of all types of tank bases, roofs, and many other structures. Used in conjunction with Belzona 9311, the system creates a highly durable waterproof and weatherproof membrane that provides the optimal protection for up to 25 years.

The second and final coat of Belzona 3111 was applied to complete the application. The coating was then left to cure for the minimum time stated in the relevant IFU (Instructions for Use) document. In the days that followed, the Vivablast teams conducted a series of coating inspections to confirm the integrity of the applied system.

Throughout the project, the Vivablast teams faced several challenges due to restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and inclement weather. Although some downtime was inevitable, the project was still completed within the given time frame, much to the delight of the client.

A Belzona distributor since 2017, Vivablast Myanmar is an industrial assets life solutions provider operating across South East Asia. The company has been servicing industry leaders on major industrial projects from the construction phase to full maintenance programs for over 25 years.
